Support Education Reform. Take Action Now!
By June 30, 2011, a rare opportunity to move public education forward in Ohio will be over. That's why we need your help.
For more than a year, the Greater Cleveland Partnership has joined with a broad coalition of organizations, foundations, education experts and businesses to carefully research and examine the vital area of public education. Like many other business groups, the GCP has pushed for public education reforms that reward good teachers and advance educational achievement.
Governor John Kasich and the Ohio House of Representatives have embraced these much-needed changes. But the Ohio Senate has adopted another version of the budget that doesn't include most of these important reforms.
We urge you to help prevent these important provisions from being cut from Ohio's budget. We're asking you to lend your voice to this vital issue by calling key state legislators (see below) today. Tell them that you want the Ohio budget to include:
-
Teacher evaluation: Ohio should put in place a system for an annual evaluation of all teachers and principals based, at least 50 percent, on student performance.
- An end to seniority-based layoffs: While experience matters-sometimes greatly-it shouldn't be the only factor. The seniority-only, quality-blind system tends to hurt poorer school districts the most during economic-mandated layoffs because less-senior teachers typically are employed in those districts.
-
Performance-based pay: Every teacher currently is treated the same regarding pay. Evaluations would allow good teachers to be rewarded.
