Reinforcing the need for collaboration: the time is right
December 08, 2009
Posted by: Andrew Jackson
The business and economic environment, both locally and nationally, have told a consistent tale over the past 12-18 months. Marketplace survival and success require:

• Relevance
• Clearly communicated value
• Responsiveness
• Flexibility

Against that framework, how does our minority economic development nonprofit community stack up? Not too well in my opinion.

Economic development mission to Bulgaria produces opportunities for business partnerships
November 18, 2009

Greetings from Sofia, Bulgaria!

The Greater Cleveland Partnership has just finished productive meetings in Sofia, Bulgaria, as part of an economic development mission that included Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, representatives of Team NEO and the Northeast Ohio Trade and Economic Consortium (NEOTEC).

The trip was planned with the cooperation of the SME Union, an European association of small and medium-sized businesses whose U.S. office is housed at the GCP, and the U.S. Commercial Service.

We need a new approach to create a new county government
November 13, 2009

Voters earlier this month overwhelmingly passed Issue 6, which the Greater Cleveland Partnership strongly supported. Issue 6 will result in a single county executive and numerous other improvements that will create a structure that can be much more conducive to economic development and job creation.

Election paves way for brighter tomorrow for NEO
November 04, 2009
Posted by: Joe Roman
Woke up with a smile this morning, and that is always the greatest way to start a day.

I’m so very pleased that Ohio voters – and Cuyahoga County voters in particular – passed three ballot issues that finally put us on the verge of making real economic improvements for our region:

  • Issue 3, which legalizes gaming in Ohio and will result in a casino being built in downtown Cleveland;

  • Issue 6, which replaces our wheezing, outdated county government with a new, more streamlined and effective system that places a specific emphasis upon economic development and job creation; and

  • Issue 4, the Tri-C levy, which will allow this local gem to continue to provide high-quality, affordable education for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

  • On the face of it, these three issues seem so different and unrelated, but the fact is they converge for a common path to making northeast Ohio stronger.

As you know by now, the launch of the Ares I-X was a stunning success. NASA Glenn and the entire space exploration team can be very proud of this accomplishment. The Plain Dealer coverage provided by John Mangels was awesome and captured to majesty of the moment. Now, the research begins – from the 700 sensors that were aboard, scientists will learn more about the flight and the future.

Tri-C needs the community’s support – Vote yes on Issue 4
    October 28, 2009

Last month, the Greater Cleveland Partnership Board of Directors voted to support Issue 4, the Cuyahoga Community College 10-year, 1.9 mill levy. The GCP Board took this action because passing this levy is extremely important for the residents and economy of our community.

Enrollment at Tri-C is up a staggering 16 percent, with fall enrollment at more than 30,000 students. This increase has resulted primarily from the large numbers of dislocated workers and veterans in the job market who are looking to be retrained. However, to keep education affordable for area residents, Tri-C has not increased its tuition in three years.

With the announcement that the launch time has been pushed back to 10:30a, our delegation of folks have loaded the bus to catch our plane in Orlando. While disappointing, it demonstrates the level of care and caution that NASA takes even with experimental, unmanned vehicles. Our hope is that we can get checked in at the airport and then view it from there.

    Launch Redux

OK, so we are back at Kennedy Space Center for a second try at launching the Ares I-X. The morning fog is clearing and there is light cloud cover. Most importantly there are plenty of openings to launch through and there's little ground wind, which was a factor in yesterday's delay.

A number of factors conspired against us and resulted in a scrubbed launch for today. They're gonna give it another go tomorrow.

    Cover(ing) the Earth

While taking the tour of Kennedy Space Center, we were able to tour the Operations and Control Building, which Carol referenced in a prior post. That’s where we saw something that made us all laugh – a Sherwin-Williams paint bucket. The GCP member company not only covers the earth, but has NASA covered too.
