October 28, 2009

Last month, the Greater Cleveland Partnership Board of Directors voted to support Issue 4, the Cuyahoga Community College 10-year, 1.9 mill levy. The GCP Board took this action because passing this levy is extremely important for the residents and economy of our community.

Enrollment at Tri-C is up a staggering 16 percent, with fall enrollment at more than 30,000 students. This increase has resulted primarily from the large numbers of dislocated workers and veterans in the job market who are looking to be retrained. However, to keep education affordable for area residents, Tri-C has not increased its tuition in three years.

Here are four key points to know about Issue 4:

1. The levy is 26 percent of Tri-C's operating revenue. To put this in context, if Issue 4 doesn't pass, it would be the equivalent of losing one of Tri-C's campuses.
2. Passage is important to help keep tuition low.
3. The levy would only cost an additional $1.50/month or $18/year on a property valued at $100,000.
4. Due to state funding cuts and foreclosures, a replacement plus levy is needed to keep Tri-C strong.

Tri-C needs this community's support now more than ever to help educate our high school graduates and retrain the increasing number of displaced workers and veterans. Passage also is important because it ensures that student tuition remains affordable, high-quality transfer programs can be developed, and upgrades in job skills training for working adults, dislocated workers, and veterans can be kept current.

On November 3, I hope that you will vote for helping Tri-C continue to deliver the high level of educational and training services that our community needs. I urge you to vote YES on Issue 4.
