After a long and fascinating day at Kennedy Space Center, I left feeling that we have a real opportunity to boost the presence of NASA Glenn in Northeast Ohio, regardless of the final outcome of this budget debate. Granted, the conference was full of supporters—very few critics—and the discussion will continue.

But I was struck by the fact that NASA Glenn and Northeast Ohio can be winners in either of two scenarios. If the nation moves to a more commercial approach to low-earth-orbit space travel, we can play a big role, especially if our efforts to build a runway at Plum Brook Station are successful. And a renewed focus on research and development fits well with our history. If, on the other hand, NASA stays the current course, NASA Glenn has a leadership role.

Unlike other NASA Centers that have a huge investment in the current program, we have the ability to be flexible. It will take a renewed effort to bring our community together and focus on the future. But, I feel confident that we can do this.

By the way, the current IMAX film at the Great Lakes Science Center is about the Hubble Space Telescope, and it is amazing! It also features our own Cleveland astronaut, Mike Good, who will be part of the next shuttle flight. Go see it!
