I have had the honor of representing the Greater Cleveland Partnership on many wonderful occasions, but today may just top them all. I’m sitting in the facility at the Kennedy Space Center that houses our astronauts while they are quarantined before flight, which in itself is a thrill for me. I am in a room with about 300 other folks, waiting for the President of the United States to make an historic speech about the future of our space program. And, by the way, I am sitting next to Bill Nye, the science guy!

To say that this is an eclectic group is an understatement. That the GCP has been included in this event is testament to the fact that we’ve come a long, long way in representing Northeast Ohio within the NASA family.

The issues being considered here today are monumental: President Obama has proposed ending the Constellation Program and replacing it with a plan to allow private industry to replace our space shuttle program. The consequences for our nation are huge, and the impact in Northeast Ohio will be felt in a real way.

The GCP has been working with NASA Glenn and our Members of Congress, as well as our partners in the Ohio aerospace industry to determine how we can best position NASA Glenn and Northeast Ohio for growth, regardless of the final outcome. Early signals from the White House hold promise, but there are many unanswered questions. How these changes will be rolled out and how they will be funded—if they are approved by Congress—are among the questions we hope will be discussed today.

Gotta go for now – POTUS is arriving soon. I’ll update you later.
