On Sept. 21, the Greater Cleveland Partnership, along with the Edison Welding Institute and the Nuclear Fabrication Consortium, will host a conference at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel to explore a topic that many have shied away from -- nuclear energy. It will focus on technology, economic impact, manufacturing, and public policy.

According to GCP President and CEO Joe Roman, the forum will offer our members and the general public an opportunity to engage in a candid discussion about the future of nuclear technology. "It's an issue that will impact everyone, and this is a discussion that couldn't be better timed. Whether you fear or cheer the coming 'nuclear renaissance,' it's time to deal with the myths and realities surrounding nuclear energy."
While nuclear technology has evolved significantly, the public remains divided. Fifty-four years ago, President Eisenhower envisioned a future in which the awesome power of the atom would "serve the needs rather than the fears of mankind." In 1974, President Nixon predicted that the nation would see more than 1,000 commercial nuclear reactors operating by the end of the century.

But those proclamations were made before Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. The public was understandably alarmed. Fears and the cost of building new nuclear plants have slowed the growth of nuclear energy, but it remains the source of 20 percent of the nation's electricity generation. Today, only 104 nuclear power plants exist in the United States.

Clearly, the solution to our energy and climate future is multifaceted. What role will nuclear energy play?
