The release of President Obama’s budget proposal for NASA created a firestorm of comment and opinion from all corners of the nation. Although his proposal included an increase in overall spending, it also called for the cancellation of the Constellation program, NASA’s mission to return to the moon in advance of traveling to Mars. Instead, his proposal focuses on the completion of the International Space Station, increased funding for aeronautics research and development, and the commercialization of low earth orbit space travel. The Space Shuttle program, already scheduled to end, would be replaced by commercial or foreign spacecraft, sometimes referred to as “space taxis”.

Make no mistake. These are significant proposals which, if enacted, will have a dramatic impact on Cleveland’s NASA Glenn Research Center and Plum Brook Station in Sandusky.

We’ve all witnessed the rise in prominence of NASA Glenn in recent years. In part, this is the result of Glenn’s role in the Constellation mission. Scientists and engineers at Glenn have been central to the design and manufacture of the Ares I-X rocket, a key component of Constellation. And following more than $100 million in upgrades, the world-class testing facilities at Plum Brook Station are positioned for exponential growth within NASA and the private sector. Without Constellation, what roles would NASA Glenn and Plum Brook Station play?

In many respects, NASA Glenn is uniquely positioned, unlike NASA Centers that have been historically linked to the Space Shuttle program. In addition to expertise in human space flight, NASA Glenn has a rich history in aeronautics research and the International Space Station. Glenn also is recognized as a leader in power and propulsion as well as advanced energy, areas of focus in the President’s proposal. As Congress debates the NASA budget, Greater Cleveland Partnership staff is working closely with our Members of Congress to position NASA Glenn in the best possible position to maintain and increase its role within the nation’s space mission.
