Ohio law allows early voting to begin 35 days before the day of a primary or a general election. Personally, I like the “feel” of waking up in the morning, and before work, taking the ride to the poll with my seven-year-old daughter, and allowing her to participate in the process with me. I like “heading to the polls.” For those who know they won’t be in town on Election Day, however, or for college students away from home or senior citizens for whom it’s hard to leave home, early voting offers them a way to stay engaged in the process and have their voices heard.

So, practically speaking, from Sept. 28 until Nov. 2, every day is an election day. Candidates know this, and campaign accordingly. As costly as campaigns are, early voting has added to the expense and changed the amount of time candidates spend on the campaign trail.

I spoke with Cuyahoga County election officials yesterday to get the early voting figures for the county. They were very helpful and responded quickly to my requests for information.

They told me that, on Wed., Sept. 15, the Board of Elections mailed 640,589 ballot applications for the Nov. 2 General Election. They will begin mailing ballots to voters after Sept. 28. During the May primary, 234,591 voters cast their ballot in Cuyahoga County. Among those 234,591 voters, 143,506 cast an absentee ballot, which is 61 percent! During the September primary, that number rose slightly to 70 percent or 112,652 absentee ballots cast.

By way of comparison, Franklin County, where the City of Columbus is located, the Board of Elections mailed 637,980 absentee ballots. It remains to be seen how many of those ballots will be filled out and returned, but if trends are any indication, 45 percent of those who voted in the May election cast an absentee ballot.

So, as you continue to educate yourself about who is running for what, who stands for what, and who best represents your interests and those of your family or business, remain mindful that voting absentee is an easy option for a busy life.
