Northeast Ohio is home to a number of industries that encourage our economic vitality, such as medical*, polymers, aerospace and advanced manufacturing, to name a few. One in particular—advanced energy—is a trade on the verge of possibly transforming the region into a global leader in clean/green energy industries. Northeast Ohio is home to a variety of people and businesses making huge waves in advanced energy; from renowned research professionals to promising start-up businesses, the region is making a name for itself through its efforts in this field.
Because the Cleveland Plus region borders Lake Erie, the implementation of wind turbines in the lake is a hot topic, as many believe doing so could catapult us to the forefront of the renewable/advanced energy discussion. Thirteen Northeast Ohio companies already manufacture parts for wind turbines, and that number is expected to grow in the future. In fact, Team NEO reports that the region already produces 600 percent more fabricated metal than the national average and is poised to export goods to wind turbine manufacturers globally. Synonymous with advanced energy is the term “Cleantech,” used to describe knowledge-based products or services that improve operational performance, productivity or efficiency while reducing costs, inputs, energy consumption, waste or pollution. According Team NEO’s report, key Cleantech supply chain industries are much stronger in Northeast Ohio than the national average. And, because Northeast Ohio has an above average share of workers compared to other regions throughout the country, we are well positioned to meet the demand to build Cleantech products.
As advanced energy and clean technologies continue to become a global focus, Northeast Ohio is well positioned to benefit from the growth.
This month, advanced energy topics will be featured on our Web site, www.ThePlus.us. Visit throughout the month to learn more about Northeast Ohio’s tremendous strength in this area.
