- The editorial in The Plain Dealer’s Dec. 8 editorial,“No backroom casino deals,” misconstrues the meetings held at our offices on Nov. 12 and 16 regarding Rock Ventures’ request to alter the Cuyahoga River to increase parking for the new Cleveland casino.

- As you may have seen in The Plain Dealer, the Greater Cleveland Partnership Board of Directors voted to approve an open letter to the community showing public support for the proposed Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) Academic Transformation Plan. The letter, which is running as a full-page ad in today’s paper on Page A3, calls for the business community and the community-at-large to work towards the success of the proposal by CMSD CEO Dr. Eugene Sanders.

- All of us in Cuyahoga County need to take a deep, communal breath before we go hurtling recklessly toward the establishment of our new county government.
We have a precious opportunity before us, a first-ever chance to efficiently re-mold and improve our county government. Voters earlier this month overwhelmingly passed Issue 6, which the Greater Cleveland Partnership strongly supported. Issue 6 will result in a single county executive and numerous other improvements that will create a structure that can be much more conducive to economic development and job creation. -

- Woke up with a smile this morning, and that is always the greatest way to start a day.
I’m so very pleased that Ohio voters – and Cuyahoga County voters in particular – passed three ballot issues that finally put us on the verge of making real economic improvements for our region:
- Issue 3, which legalizes gaming in Ohio and will result in a casino being built in downtown Cleveland;
- Issue 6, which replaces our wheezing, outdated county government with a new, more streamlined and effective system that places a specific emphasis upon economic development and job creation; and
- Issue 4, the Tri-C levy, which will allow this local gem to continue to provide high-quality, affordable education for the jobs of today and tomorrow.
On the face of it, these three issues seem so different and unrelated, but the fact is they converge for a common path to making northeast Ohio stronger. -

- Last month, the Greater Cleveland Partnership Board of Directors voted to support Issue 4, the Cuyahoga Community College 10-year, 1.9 mill levy. The GCP Board took this action because passing this levy is extremely important for the residents and economy of our community.
Enrollment at Tri-C is up a staggering 16 percent, with fall enrollment at more than 30,000 students. This increase has resulted primarily from the large numbers of dislocated workers and veterans in the job market who are looking to be retrained. However, to keep education affordable for area residents, Tri-C has not increased its tuition in three years. -

- In less than a month, Cuyahoga County will be standing at the crossroads of opportunity. Voters, on November 3rd, will decide the important question of whether we want to go on as we have been, or take a real chance at transforming/improving our future.
We’ve been at this intersection before, so here’s hoping that this time Cuyahoga County turns the correct way.
Yes, we are experiencing some tough economic times, but that doesn’t mean we can’t change so as to prosper.
