International Space Station Research Forum
The NASA International Space Station (ISS) Program Office at the Johnson Space Center is partnering with the NASA Glenn Research Center to share the accomplishments and opportunities for research aboard the International Space Station through a series of events in Ohio. It's called "Destination Station." Greater Cleveland Partnership members are invited to the first event: an ISS Research Forum that will be held at the Great Lakes Science Center on Friday, June 17, 2011. Attendance is free.
As part of the program, Astronaut Don Pettit (photo right) will discuss conducting research in microgravity. Pettit lived aboard the space station for 5 1/2 months in 2002-2003, and he is scheduled to return to station later this year as flight engineer for space station Expedition 30. Dr. Julie A. Robinson, the program scientist for the ISS, will highlight the research capabilities of the ISS National Laboratory and explain why commercial, academic and government institutions should propose to conduct research on the ISS.
The goal of the forum is to promote opportunities for research and technology development on the ISS National Laboratory among commercial, academic and government institutions by highlighting the unique benefits of research in a microgravity environment. The Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI) is pleased to assist in organizing this research forum. The forum will showcase the ISS as a National Laboratory, and offer NASA's support to interested researchers. The morning will include plenary sessions with speakers and panel discussions featuring science disciplines and some specific space station success stories. The afternoon (optional) will be dedicated to tours* of NASA Glenn's premiere research facilities that support ISS research.
NOTE: Attendance at the Forum in unrestricted. Access to the tour program is limited to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs). All visitors are required to present government-issued photo identification; and LPRs are required to present their Permanent Resident Card.
