NASA Glenn Projects and Programs Included in Appropriations Bill
Friday, November 11, 2005
The Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) today applauded Congress for funding projects and programs that help NASA Glenn continue its important mission of research and help build upon Glenn’s positive economic impact in Northeast Ohio. Reversing a trend, the bill includes an increased emphasis on aeronautics research, which is a major program at NASA Glenn. Additionally, the legislation includes important language that will help protect Glenn’s world-class civil service workforce.
“NASA Glenn is an important employer in Northeast Ohio,” said Frederick Nance, GCP’s Vice Chair of Advocacy. “The Greater Cleveland Partnership advocates for the health of the center because we understand the importance of a strong NASA facility in our region. In this difficult budget climate, we are very pleased that the Ohio delegation, especially Senate Appropriations Committee Member Mike DeWine, was able to secure an impressive amount of funding.”
The 2006 Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Bill Conference Report contains many GCP priorities. Funding for programs and projects that are housed at NASA Glenn includes:
-
$4 million for the Ultra-Efficient Engine Technology Program (UEET)
-
$2.75 million for the Electric Power, Energy, and Propulsion Programs
-
$1.1 million in additional funding for advanced aeronautics research
-
$1 million for the Garrett Morgan Commercialization Initiative
-
$750,000 to conduct research in advanced power and propulsion systems for use in space exploration
-
$400,000 to conduct health and performance programs to protect astronauts during space travel
“NASA Glenn contributes employment, brain power, and economic value to Northeast Ohio. It is an important resource for our region and for NASA,” said Les Vinney Chairman of the Ohio Aerospace Council. “We are thrilled that Congress agrees with us and has funded programs that help NASA Glenn continue its important work in preparing the space program for space exploration and in re-emphasizing its work in aeronautics.”
After receiving approval from the House and Senate, the bill will be sent to the President for his signature.
