TEAM Academy Unveils New Equipment Made Possible by Public Private Partnership

Tuesday, February 21, 2006

TEAM (Technology Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing) Academy at Max S. Hayes Career and Technical High School, of the Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD), today unveiled advanced manufacturing equipment that was purchased with federal funding secured by the Greater Cleveland Partnership and Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones.

“This grant, and the new, high-tech machines, will help prepare our students for advanced careers that will grow the city and the region,” said Lisa Ruda, CMSD interim chief executive officer.

GCP, with support from Rep. Tubbs Jones, secured a $248,525 U.S. Department of Education grant to establish the TEAM Academy and to purchase state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing equipment that will ensure the students are prepared to enter the workforce. Computer numerical controlled vertical machining centers, a staple in the manufacturing workplace, are able to machine three-dimensional shapes and can store, sort and automatically change cutting tools.

“The TEAM Academy is a great example of what can be accomplished when dedicated professionals join with public officials to improve the quality of education available to Cleveland students,” said Danny Williams, GCP senior vice president of education, workforce and inclusion.

The GCP strategic plan calls for aligning the region’s education and workforce development systems with the needs of business and the economy. Working with the TEAM Academy is one of several GCP efforts to prepare students for careers in the knowledge economy and improve the economic environment of our region.

"I am extremely grateful to have been able to assist Max Hayes in securing the grant for the T.E.A.M. Academy," stated Rep. Tubbs Jones. "This program has and continues to be important in the educational development of our young people and will give them exposure to new opportunities in the fields of manufacturing and engineering. I applaud Max Hayes High School, the Cleveland Municipal School District, and all community partners who have supported this project."

The TEAM mission to prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing and post-secondary education is critical to the mission of the CMSD. TEAM Academy is the only manufacturing and pre-engineering preparation program in the CMSD. At full capacity the program will enroll 375 students. The first TEAM Academy class will graduate in June 2007.

Corporate support for the TEAM Academy has come from: Eaton Corporation, Jergens Inc., Parker Hannifin, Swagelok, NASA, Bush Inc., Wire-Net, HCS Foundation and others.
