Greater Cleveland Partnership, NorTech Help Northeast Ohio Tech Firms Access Federal Funds for Innovation
Thursday, March 13, 2008
Cleveland, March 13, 2008 - The Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) and NorTech gathered representatives from more than 50 research and technology institutions and companies from throughout Northeast Ohio to be the first to hear about the federal government's new program to support innovation. Small- and medium-sized companies that conduct research in areas of "critical national need" would be eligible to apply for the Technology and Innovation Program (TIP) grants.
Carol Caruso, senior vice president of advocacy at the Greater Cleveland Partnership, acknowledged that as competition for limited Congressional earmarks gets tougher, the GCP is looking for alternative ways federal funds can be directed to Northeast Ohio. "Our region was extremely successful in competing for Third Frontier funding from the State of Ohio and we expect that this program will prove beneficial to the companies in our region."
TIP was created by the America Competes Act of 2007 and currently it is the only part of the legislation that has received approval for funding. At the request of the GCP, Marc Stanley, director of TIP, made Cleveland his first stop in the nation to discuss the new program.
Handouts from the presentation are available here.
