Cleveland named as a "best city" for new college grads
Monday, July 26, 2010
Northeast Ohio is one of the best places for new college grads, and the experts at Bloomberg BusinessWeek just highlighted that fact. In the publication’s latest list of “Best Cities for New College Grads,” Cleveland ranked 17th, up 11 spots from its 2009 ranking, moving ahead of places such as Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Charlotte, Cincinnati and Tampa.
More than 200,000 college students attend one or more of Northeast Ohio’s 27 accredited college and universities. And, according to the Ohio Board of Regents, an average of 76 percent of Ohio’s public college graduates and 72 percent of the state’s private college graduates stay in Ohio for work or to continue their education within five months of graduation.
“We’re actively seeking to engage this vital population through our Web site, pluscollege.com,” says Rick Batyko, the Greater Cleveland Partnership’s vice president of regional marketing. “It’s a one-stop resource where students can learn more about the opportunities available to them, ranging from how to connect with internship opportunities to events and venues that make Northeast Ohio a great place to have fun.”
While graduates are attracted to Northeast Ohio for a variety of reasons, access to thousands of employers representing a wide range of industries is a significant factor. Forty percent of Fortune 500 companies have headquarters, major divisions, subsidiaries or sales offices in Northeast Ohio. Growth in the science and engineering fields, as well as in the biomedical sector, has been a key driver of new jobs in the region.
