Energy institute chief also to speak at “Future of Nuclear Technology in the U.S.”

Cleveland, Ohio—Misperceptions about nuclear energy will be among the topics discussed Sept. 21 at an educational forum in Cleveland featuring national speakers.“The Future of Nuclear Technology in the U.S.” is being sponsored by the Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP), Columbus-based EWI Energy Center and the Nuclear Fabrication Consortium.

Dr. Patrick Moore, co-chair of the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition and a co-founder of the international environmental group Greenpeace, believes that nuclear energy must be in the mix of U.S. energy choices.

“Nuclear energy is the only large-scale, cost-effective energy source that can reduce (CO2) emissions while continuing to satisfy a growing demand for power,” Moore wrote in 2006 in the Washington Post. “And these days it can do so safely.”

Joining Moore as a keynote speaker will be Karen Alderman Harbert, president and chief executive office of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for 21st Century Energy. Harbert is the former assistant secretary for policy and international affairs at the U.S. Department of Energy, where she was the primary policy advisor to the Secretary on domestic and international energy issues.

The forum will focus on nuclear energy technology, economic impact, manufacturing and public policy. Nuclear power provides 20 percent of the nation’s electricity generation, but there continue to be public concerns about the safety of the energy source. The forum is designed to discuss such concerns, and to also track the advancement of nuclear technology.

“It’s an issue that will impact everyone and this is a discussion that couldn’t be better timed,” said GCP President and CEO Joe Roman. “Whether you fear or cheer the coming ‘nuclear renaissance,’ it’s time to deal with the myths and realities surrounding nuclear energy.”

Businesses involved in advanced energy, and consumers and policymakers with a keen interest in nuclear energy are encouraged to attend. For more information, or to register, visit http://www.nuclearforumcleveland.com/.
