GCP, other Ohio metro chambers back effort to explore feasibility of leasing Ohio Turnpike
Wednesday, November 23, 2011
Cleveland, Ohio—The Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) has joined other Ohio-based metropolitan chambers of commerce and the Ohio Chamber in sending a letter to Gov. John Kasich expressing support for the state’s intention to explore options related to a possible lease of the Ohio Turnpike. In the letter, chamber leaders said that “the time is now for a thorough examination of this important state asset.”
“Examining a lease of the Ohio Turnpike is consistent with the spirit of recommendations contained in the ’Redesigning Ohio’ report that we jointly released last year,” said GCP President and CEO Joe Roman. “This is a chance for Northeast Ohio to realize an ability to accelerate some key infrastructure projects that could leverage investment, just when we need it most. We have to explore every new opportunity that doesn’t raise taxes.”
The coalition of nine chambers of commerce represents Ohio’s larger metro areas, as well as the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the GCP, the participating metropolitan chambers of commerce are: Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, Columbus Chamber, Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, Greater Akron Chamber, Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce and Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber.
