Ohio newspapers urge "yes" vote on Issue 2 to give taxpayers more control

Cleveland, Ohio—Ohio newspapers are taking a position on Issue 2, and their editorials are urging citizens to vote "yes" to give taxpayers more control.

The Plain Dealer writes that “Issue 2 will give local governments and school districts more tools to control labor costs and protect taxpayers. It requires public employees to make the same kind of contributions toward their health and pension benefits that most private-sector workers do.” Specifically, Issue 2 calls for all public employees to pay at least 15 percent of their health care premiums and contribute their required share of 10 percent into their retirement plan.

The Columbus Dispatch echoes this sentiment, stating that “Issue 2 will restore control of government budgets to taxpayers...As budgets are mercilessly squeezed by the protracted economic downturn, state agencies and local governments need relief from the union-friendly conditions, inherent in Ohio law before Senate Bill 5, that have driven up labor costs and left many public employees with salaries and, especially, benefits that far outstrip those of the taxpayers who pay for them.”
