Why we support Nestlé’s expansion project in Solon
Thursday, November 03, 2011
Cleveland, Ohio—Here’s our Letter to the Editor, from Greater Cleveland Partnership President and CEO Joe Roman, which was published in the Chagrin Solon Sun:
“The Greater Cleveland Partnership urges residents of the city of Solon to vote yes on Issue 95.
“The GCP is a membership association of Northeast Ohio companies and organizations and is among the largest metropolitan chambers of commerce in the nation. As one of the economic development organizations for our region, the GCP recognizes the potential represented by Nestlé’s expansion project.
“We feel strongly that Nestlé’s planned expansion should take place in Solon, on the site the company has proposed. After all, the Nestlé frozen business has its roots here going back to the creation of the Stouffer’s brand in 1954 and the introduction of Lean Cuisine in 1981. This successful business—home to these two “billion dollar” brands and much more—first invested in Solon back in 1968 and has expanded that facility 28 times since. Today, over 1900 people work at Nestlé in Solon.
“Nestlé’s request that a mere 18 acres of its property adjacent to existing facilities be rezoned is reasonable. This will allow the construction of a product technology center that will house global research and development effort and could result in as many as 40 to 60 new technology-based jobs in our region.
“More jobs and enhanced investment in the Nestlé property will lead to more tax revenue for the city of Solon and the Solon schools without raising taxes. We urge a “yes” on Issue 95.”
As an association of business members, the Greater Cleveland Partnership mobilizes private-sector leadership, expertise and resources to create jobs and leverage investment to improve the economic vitality of the region. http://www.gcpartnership.com
