Cleveland, Ohio—The Greater Cleveland Partnership has released this statement by President and CEO Joe Roman in support of the updated and expanded transformation plan for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) announced Monday by Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson:

“Greater Cleveland can point to numerous projects and efforts as tangible examples of our city progressing and growing,” said Roman, “but there is a significant, stubborn challenge that must be addressed: The unacceptable performance of public education in Cleveland. Despite some minor successes, the overall academic results are poor.

“The problems are chronic and they are structural. We applaud Mayor Jackson’s new plan to improve education in Cleveland. The plan is aggressive and well-conceived. It includes major changes that we believe must occur if Cleveland’s children are going to have a chance to receive a noticeably improved education. The Greater Cleveland Partnership supports this plan.”

The GCP played a significant role in helping to shape the plan. As the organization reviewed its strategic priorities over the past few months, the GCP’s Education Strategic Planning Working Group confirmed that strengthening public education in Cleveland remains a priority for the organization.

As an association of business members, the Greater Cleveland Partnership mobilizes private-sector leadership, expertise and resources to develop attractive business conditions that create jobs, grow investment and improve the economic prosperity of the region.
