GCP, city, and Hopkins focus on boosting nonstop service
on priority business routes

As air service out of Hopkins Airport (CLE) continues to evolve, the Greater Cleveland Partnership, the City of Cleveland and airport officials remain focused on how to restore nonstop service to seven priority business routes.

Priority destinations cities no longer served nonstop by United are Austin, Kansas City, New Orleans, Providence, R.I., San Antonio. San Diego and West Palm Beach. Efforts also include working to increase the frequency of nonstops to St. Louis, which is currently served by two nonstop flights from CLE.

"The partnership between the city and the business community around Hopkins airport remains strong,” says Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) President and CEO Joe Roman. “As the airline industry continues to evolve and adjust to market conditions, it’s anticipated that other carriers will add new service or increased frequencies to cities that are under-served.

“The work of our Air Service Demand Task Force with the city and Hopkins includes not only identifying those cities but also airlines with capacity to boost or add nonstop service from CLE. We’ll also continue to work with the city to make improvements at the airport that we think are critical,” says Roman. “In the past year, we've made significant progress, and the foundation is in place to continue building on that.

“The market we always thought would be strong, even in light of a de-hubbing, has proven to be the case,” he said.

US Air/American Airlines, Delta and Air Canada are providing five daily nonstop flights to Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Toronto—three markets impacted by the hub’s closing—while other airlines continue to explore doing business in Cleveland.

Even more options for CLE travelers...

During 2014, airlines such as Frontier, Spirit, Southwest and Delta announced additional nonstop service at CLE. And, by year-end, JetBlue became a CLE carrier, announcing the launch of two daily nonstop CLE-Boston flights beginning in April 2015.

In addition, American Airlines announced in December that it will re-start nonstop service to New York’s LaGuardia Airport from CLE on March 29, 2015.

The Greater Cleveland Partnership’s 2015/2016 Public Policy Agenda, released last month, lays out the organization’s two-year government advocacy priorities to support continuation of metro Cleveland’s economic renaissance.

  • Ensuring that Cleveland is “RNC-ready” to host the 2016 Republican National Convention
  • Continuing support for government programs that incentivize private investment in catalytic development projects in downtown and other Cleveland neighborhoods
  • Speaking out for state and federal tax reform and
  • Working to check efforts to repeal Common Core standards, which are essential for high-quality education for Ohio’s children.

Forum explores opportunities to grow Cleveland’s food industry

Sponsored by Citizens Commercial Banking, the Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) and the Opportunity Corridor Partnership hosted the Food Industry and Opportunity Corridor Forum on January 29 at Miceli Dairy Products.

The business forum featured more than 80 food industry experts discussing how to grow the Cleveland and Northeast Ohio food sector. Moderated by Joe DiRocco, president of Citizens Commercial Bank for Ohio, speakers also included Aaron Pitts, JobsOhio managing director for food processing & agribusiness; Dave Beck, president and CEO, Center for Innovative Food Technology; and Marie Kittredge, executive director, Opportunity Corridor Partnership.

The event was kicked off by Jonathan Miceli, vice president, corporate administration of Miceli Dairy, which recently completed major expansions to its production, office and visitors center facilities in projects supported by GCP, the State of Ohio, City of Cleveland and other economic development partners.

Speakers discussed updates to the transformational Opportunity Corridor transportation and economic development project and how it can benefit the area's food industry; available state and local resources including workforce programs for businesses to grow and expand; and technical and financial assistance available through resource organizations.

Attendees' questions focused on finding additional assistance to food industry businesses, access to incubator and growth space and critical workforce recruitment and training issues. All agreed that the food industry is primed for growth and that jobs in this industry are more skilled and stable than generally assumed, offering our region strong economic opportunities.

Dan Berry to retire from MAGNET

Daniel E Berry, president and chief executive officer of the Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network (MAGNET), today announced his retirement from that organization.

Berry was named to his position in May 2010. He had served as interim CEO for several months on loan from the Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) where he was an executive vice president since the organization’s founding in 2004. Prior to that, he held executive positions at the Greater Cleveland Growth Association and The George Gund Foundation.

The MAGNET Board of Directors has begun a search for a new president and CEO and Berry has agreed to remain on staff until his replacement can be found and a successful transition can be made.

It is also part of the regional economic development system that the GCP helped to create and continues to support.

IT organization NEOSA re-engineers itself as OHTech

The Northeast Ohio Software Association (NEOSA), COSE’s technology network, announced last week that as part of its ongoing transformation, a central feature of the organization – its name has been changed to OHTech.

The change was announced by Brad Nellis, executive director of OHTech, a technology industry association that represents nearly 700 member organizations.

“As part of a strategic planning process begun several months ago, our advisory board examined key issues of the organization and our industry,” Nellis explained. “The goal was to ensure we continue to grow and provide valued service to a growing tech community for years to follow,” he said.
