Following a standoff on the Senate floor Thursday evening, the U.S. Senate approved tax reform legislation early Saturday morning.
The Senate tax legislation passed despite various concerns over the future impact on the nation’s debt and that the proposal may not provide enough benefits for certain types of businesses and individuals.
Members of the Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) believe a thoughtful, balanced, and competitive tax environment is critical to the success of our economy and that any reforms made must be all-inclusive and benefit all sectors of the business community. GCP members also understand having tools, like the New Market Tax Credit and Historic Tax Credit, are crucial to advance economic development in Greater Cleveland.
The Senate’s tax bill would maintain the New Market Tax Credit and Historic Tax Credit; a separate House version that passed in mid-November would not. The House tax legislation would cut the corporate rate to 20 percent (effective in tax year 2018) and caps the pass-through business rate at 25 percent. The Senate initiative would cut the corporate rate to 20 percent (effective in tax year 2019) and adopt a 23 percent deduction for pass-through income.
The House and Senate are expected to go to a conference committee to reach a compromise before the end of the year.

Volunteer Opportunities with Big Brothers Big Sisters
The Big Brothers Big Sisters program is looking for volunteers for the Richmond Heights and Garfield Heights Mentoring programs.
Richmond Heights Coding and Mentoring Program (Site Based)
This program serves children in the 5th-8th grade. Children are students at Richmond Heights Primary and Secondary schools. Mentoring sessions take place weekly, and are structured, typically lasting on hour and taking place in the school after the school day. Mentoring takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays at 2:30pm-4:30pm. Mentors have the option to come on either Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday.

Garfield Heights Mentoring Program (Site Based and Community Based)
This program combines both Site Based and Community Based mentoring. The Site Based program caters to children in grades 2nd-5th and is offered during the child’s recess period at his/her school. Mentoring sessions take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11:50am-12:30pm or 12:35pm-1:15pm. Matches get together once a week at the same time/day throughout the school year. During the match’s time together (.5-1 hour, depending on the site), they can eat lunch, do homework, play board games or just hang out. The adult and youth in the Lunch Buddies program DO NOT have contact outside of the school environment. Community Based Mentoring serves 6th-12th grades. Big and Littles share in everyday activities such as baking cookies, raking leaves, going for a bike ride, or shooting hoops. During these special outings, Bigs help cultivate relationships that provide their Littles with skills to manage every day challenges.
