A How-to Workshop to Improve Your Observational Skills

Inspired by Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats method, Jim Gilmore has created a unique and useful tool to help improve our observational skills. His “Six Looking Glasses” provide a set of skills to master in order to enhance the way we look at the world around us. These include the ability to:

  • Survey and scan to see the big picture
  • Compare and contrast to overcome personal bias
  • Spot significance in any scene
  • Scrutinize numerous details
  • Uncover potential opportunities
  • See what’s in the mind’s eye

This workshop is designed to improve one’s observation skills and to supercharge the “visual intelligence” brought to any ideation or implementation endeavor. Attendees will walk away with the LOOK book as a means to continue their growth and skills development.

About our speaker

As co-author of "The Experience Economy: Updated Edition," Jim Gilmore literally wrote the book that spawned worldwide interest in experience design, customer experience management, and experiential marketing.

Tom Peters has called "The Experience Economy" a "brilliant, absolutely original book,” and 800-CEO-READ named it one of “The 100 Best Business Books of All Time.” The volume is now published in 19 languages. 

Gilmore's  most recent book is "Look: A Practical Guide for Improving Your Observational Skills." A prequel to Edward de Bono’s "Six Thinking Hats," the book describes a similar metaphorical tool using “Six Looking Glasses” to foster greater innovation through improved observation.

Gilmore’s ideas have been featured in numerous articles on business strategy and innovation for such publications as Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, and Investors Business Daily, among others.

Gilmore is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He began his career with Procter & Gamble and then spent more than 10 years consulting with Cleveland Consulting Associates and Computer Sciences Corporation, heading CSC Consulting's process innovation practice.

He is an assistant professor in the Innovation and Design department in the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University.
