Governor proposes biennium budget

The state budget process begins every two years with a spending proposal from the Governor of Ohio. Governor Kasich unveiled his proposal earlier today in Columbus.

The Ohio House Finance Committee is scheduled to begin hearings on the two-year plan on Wednesday. Lawmakers in the Ohio House and the Ohio Senate will spend the next several months listening to testimony and amending the plan proposed by the Governor.

A final budget is expected to be approved by the legislature and sent back to the Governor’s desk for enactment before the start of the new state fiscal year on July 1.

Online Diversity Assessment now available

The Commission on Economic Inclusion has collected data and reported on the status of diversity and inclusion in Northeast Ohio for 16 years using the Employers Survey on Diversity, now known as the Diversity & Inclusion Organization Assessment.

The results of the D&I Organization Assessment function as a barometer of inclusion in our region and provide employers with a tool and benchmarks for examining their own diversity and inclusion efforts.

During the past year, the Commission solicited feedback from stakeholders in various industries and job responsibilities and implemented a full re-design of the Assessment using a new online platform. The result is a far more powerful tool that is easier to use and will provide more meaningful feedback in a tighter time frame.

The new Assessment was rolled out last week to organizations that have participated in the past, but it is also available to all Greater Cleveland Partnership members as a benefit of membership. We encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity!

Employers who complete the D&I Assessment will receive immediate feedback upon making their final submission, along with suggested resources which can be useful for internal diversity and inclusion strategic planning. The D&I Assessment and the associated resources can be helpful to any organization – whether they have an established D&I program in place, or they are looking for a place to start.

A report on aggregate results of all employers’ data, as well as a confidential individual scorecard for each organization that participated, will be distributed after the data collection is complete.

Advancing workforce development in our region

About 40 representatives from the business and education communities joined Ryan Burgess, director of Ohio’s Office of Workforce Transformation, and State Senator Sandra Williams at the Greater Cleveland Partnership’s Offices last week for a conversation on “Advancing Workforce Development in Northeast Ohio.”

Several topics were covered including the state’s efforts to streamline and better focus state workforce development and training programs; leveraging and maximizing dollars available for workforce training; expanding criteria to allow the use of federal funds for vocational training; and improving connections between employers and their local school districts to support efforts that would prepare students to be employment ready.

Hotel demand and revenue on the rise in Cuyahoga County

While a recent industry report showed hotel occupancy in Cuyahoga County to be down due to an increased number of rooms, it also has several positives not to be overlooked.

As Destination Cleveland has noted, this includes:
  • Demand in the Cleveland metropolitan area increased by 2.8 percent.
  • Downtown demand specifically increased by 11.5 percent (NOTE: This was reported incorrectly at 7.8 percent in The Plain Dealer article on Tuesday, 1/24.).
  • Cuyahoga County demand increased by 3.5 percent while the U.S. demand increased by 1.7 percent.
  • Revenue increased by 9.7 percent, which means more hotel rooms were sold and outpaced the national growth by 1.4 percent.
  • Average Daily Rate (ADR), the average rental rate for a single room, increased from $102 to $109.
These are especially good signs considering the 5.8 percent increase in supply in the overall Cleveland MSA.

U.S. middle market ends 2016 on strong note;
Ohio results even better

The U.S. middle market ended 2016 on a strong note with year-over-year revenue growth rates above the five-year average and employment growth rates at an all-time high since the inception of the National Center for the Middle Market’s (NCMM) quarterly Indicator report five years ago.

Ohio’s year-end middle-market results were even better, as reported in the NCMM’s 4Q Middle-Market Indicator (MMI) report.

Ohio’s middle-market revenue growth over past 12 months was 7.1 percent compared to the national 12-month growth rate of 6.9 percent. In addition, Ohio middle-market’s employment growth for the past 12 months was nine percent while the national employment growth rate for the same time period was 5.4 percent.

Ohio middle-market executives who participated in the survey also are more confident in their local economies when compared to their peers nationwide with 89 percent expressing confidence compared to 86 percent nationally.

That optimism also carries over to the national and global economies. For the national economy, 87 percent of Ohio respondents expressed confidence compared to 81 percent nationally. Likewise, for the global economy, the confidence rate was 74 percent (Ohio) and 65 percent (nationwide).

JumpStart portfolio client acquired for $1.1 billion

When McKesson agreed to acquire CoverMYMeds—a JumpStart portfolio client—for $1.1 billion, plus another $300 million if financial targets are met, the deal puts the medical software business it into the hands of the fifth-largest company in the United States.

The deal also could generate cash for a few local investors, including JumpStart Inc, which invested in CoverMyMeds in 2010, just two years after the company was founded.

JumpStart, which was launched In response to the need for job and wealth creation in Northeast, is charged with creating economic transformation in Northeast Ohio through the growth of an entrepreneurial ecosystem.

It is part of the regional economic development system that the Greater Cleveland Partnership helped to create and continues to support.

CoverMyMeds will operate as independent business unit of McKesson, a healthcare services and information technology company, under its existing leadership team, according to a post on CoverMyMeds.com.

Business volunteers needed for Junior Achievement
Career Success Day

Junior Achievement (JA) is seeking business professionals and community members to help high school freshmen define and refine their interpersonal and employability skills while sharing information about themselves and their career path.

During JA Career Success Day on Friday, February 24, volunteers will spend the day in the classroom using interactive lessons provided by JA to prepare students for success in tomorrow’s workplace.

There are volunteer opportunities from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at these Cleveland Metropolitan School District Academies of Cleveland High Schools: Garrett Morgan, Jane Addams,
Max S. Hayes, Martin Luther King Jr., & Washington Park.

All new volunteers will go through training to prepare for their teaching experience. The snow date is Friday, March 3; please hold both dates on your calendar.

Join WIRE-Net’s competency-based CNC apprenticeship Consortium

As part of WIRE-Net's initiative to develop a skilled workforce, the organization is bringing its apprenticeship model to another critical "in-demand" career in our region – CNC Machinists.

Greater Cleveland Partnership members are invited to join WIRE-Net’s next Consortium focused on using a NIMS competency-based program, which measures apprentices' progress based upon "what they know and can demonstrate" versus "how many hours logged" in their program.

You can learn more at an information session for local manufacturers that will provide an overview of the program standards/design.
