How you can leverage inclusion to boost competitiveness
Success in business includes increasing competitiveness, boosting the bottom line, and attracting and keeping top talent.
A growing number of studies has found that all three can happen when a company creates strategies to develop and sustain an inclusive workplace and leverage its benefits.
The Commission on Economic Inclusion
, a program of the Greater Cleveland Partnership, is inviting GCP members who aren’t already part of its roster of 100+ Northeast Ohio employers
to sign up and take the first steps toward building and leveraging an inclusive organization.
A letter sent recently to non-Commission member CEOs from GCP Board Chair Beth Mooney, chairman and CEO of KeyCorp
, and GCP President and CEO Joe Roman, explains the rationale for the Commission’s work and how companies can benefit from it.
“The business value of an inclusive workplace is well-documented. A 2012 McKinsey study, Is There a Payoff from Top-Team Performance, looked at the top executive teams of 180 public firms and found that those with more diverse teams financially outperformed their peers by significant margins.
“Consequently, companies are moving from a perspective of diversity and inclusion as a ‘should do’ to a ‘want to do’ to improve their bottom-line. Admittedly, that shift isn’t easy.
“The Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) has tools and resources available to you through the Commission on Economic Inclusion to assist your company with creating a more inclusive workplace. The Commission works with its member organizations to advance their inclusion initiatives and increase diversity at the board, senior management, workforce, and supplier levels.”
Joining the Commission
Two levels of participation are available:
Affiliate: Your employees have access to limited resources and events including the annual inclusion conference, Diversity Professionals Group forums and Chief Procurement Officers quarterly meetings.
Member: Includes all of the above plus national, regional and industry benchmarking data and a confidential organizational scorecard through your participation in the Commission’s annual Employers Survey on Diversity™.

Be informed about November 3rd ballot issues

- YES on Issue 1: The Greater Cleveland Partnership is urging a YES vote on Issue 1, the Fair Districts Ohio statewide ballot issue. More protection is needed to ensure districts are drawn in a truly bipartisan manner, and our business members see this as a “good government” issue.
Currently, the districts are drawn so the vast majority of candidates have little to worry about once they win their primary. The result is a polarization of our General Assembly, leaving little room for compromise on the issues impacting our state.

- YES on Issue 2: The GCP supports Issue 2, an amendment which, if passed, would limit constitutional amendments proposing to grant economic monopoly rights not available to other similarly situated persons. In addition, the amendment would invalidate a successful vote on the marijuana legalization question on the same ballot.
- NO on Issue 3: Following a lengthy review, the GCP concluded that the ResponsibleOhio proposal to permit marijuana use for both recreational and medical purposes could negatively impact workplaces and burden small businesses in Ohio.

YES on Issue 8: The GCP urges a “YES” vote on Issue 8, which calls for renewal of an existing cigarette tax in Cuyahoga County that generates support for arts and culture.

Developers’ Showcase highlights Northeast Ohio’s development strengths, challenges
With 170 registrants and 14 civic and developer exhibitors, the NAIOP 2015 Developers' Showcase was an outstanding event that highlighted Northeast Ohio's development strengths and challenges as critiqued by national site selectors. The event was held at the Music Box Supper Club in The Flats.
Following an update by Greater Cleveland Partnership President and CEO Joe Roman about the 2016 Republican National Convention, Port of Cleveland President and CEO Will Friedman questioned panelists about business priorities in expansion projects and what Northeast Ohio can do to position itself to maximize development.
Focusing on regional strengths
Panelists remarked that Northeast Ohio has done a good job of focusing on its strengths in sectors such as manufacturing and biomedical activity and their related skilled workforces, rather than diluting its effort trying to be a jack of all trades across all business sectors.
While the tarnish of the Rust Belt image is still on the minds of some selection professionals, the panelists agreed that recent development successes and the attention that the convention will bring are helping to improve our region's image, and will keep Cleveland and Northeast Ohio on the minds of expanding companies. Lack of large development sites are a difficulty, while infrastructure capacity, a positive legacy of our industrial past, was cited as a solid strength.
The panelists' remarks were followed by an unveiling of a new joint initiative by the Industrial Asset Management Council (IAMC) and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR).
Through flexible design, DesignFlex 2030 aims to facilitate continuous adaptability, improve operating efficiencies, increase technological capacity and decrease down time of new industrial facilities. Beyond the first focus of food manufacturing operations, the joint effort will continue to roll out updates on other industrial building types, including warehouse/distribution and biomedical/pharmaceutical operations.
The GCP has long been supportive of NAIOP, the trade group for commercial real estate development professionals. This event improved area development and real estate officials' understanding of how to maximize our business development and attraction opportunities.

Port of Cleveland beneficial sediment initiative scores
first major customer
The Port of Cleveland
and its partner Kurtz Bros., Inc.
have scored their first major user in the Port’s strategic effort to market sediment for beneficial use.
Great Lakes Construction, Co. (“Great Lakes”) has purchased 6,890 cubic yards of sediment for use in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Lakeland Boulevard / I-90 Replacement Project in Euclid.
The Great Lakes’ purchase—enough to fill 300 standard dump trucks—represents a big step forward in the Port’s overarching plan to creatively and efficiently manage river sediment, demonstrating that a private market does indeed exist, according to Port President and CEO Will Friedman.
“It shows there really is a market for this material, and people will pay for it,” he said. “That’s a win-win—saving tax dollars and providing a useful product to the private market.”
To keep the Cuyahoga deep enough for large commercial ships, over 200,000 cubic yards of sediment must be dredged annually—enough to fill a major league baseball stadium 30 feet deep. Traditionally, sediment was treated as waste and placed in confined disposal facilities (CDFs). But Port-commissioned studies found market demand for beneficial uses of sediment, including anything from composting to road fill.
Based on the study, the Port developed a multi-tiered approach
to beneficially reuse as much sediment as possible, processing and marketing the material through its partnership with Kurtz Bros., a leader in serving the waste-to-resource and soil-related industries. Just a few months into the relationship, the Great Lakes’ deal has helped make the vision a reality.
Making it work: positive outcomes
“When our studies determined the Port could turn sediment from waste into a useful product while also reducing public expense and advancing green, sustainable practices, we ran with it,” said Friedman. “The Great Lakes Construction–ODOT project is a great example of how sediment can be used, and we’re looking forward to more companies seeing the benefits of the product.”

GCP members honored with Commuter Choice Awards
Congratulations to Greater Cleveland Partnership members NASA Glenn Research Center
and Case Western Reserve University
(CWRU) who won NOACA's 2015 Gold Commuter Choice Awards
for their support of environmentally friendly forms of transportation and implementation of programs that strongly encourage alternative commuting for their employees.
This is the second year that NASA Glenn earned a Gold rating. CWRU, a recipient of a Bronze rating in 2014, achieved the Gold rating this year by increasing employee incentive programs, including subsidized employee transit passes and secure, covered parking for bicycles. NOACA rewarded this effort by also presenting CWRU with the 2015 “Most Improved” Award.
