Advocacy efforts focus on building a strong talent pipeline

The Greater Cleveland Partnership recently provided testimony on SB 3 and HB 166, key workforce bills moving through the Ohio General Assembly that seek to strengthen the state’s workforce development system.

The provisions in both pieces of legislation stem from the Building Ohio’s Future Workforce report, released by the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation at the beginning of the year.

Among the recommended policies in both pieces of legislation, the GCP is supportive of those that would increase career experiences and opportunities for students, align state law with the federal Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act, and make needed reforms to the Certificates of Qualification for Employment (CQE) program.

This program assists formerly incarcerated individuals in demonstrating career readiness and provides employer protections against negligent hiring for companies that accept CQEs.

“GCP works with key partners in the private and public sectors on employer-driven short-and long-term strategies to develop and attract a highly skilled workforce that supports the economic development goals of our region,” said Alesha Washington, the GCP’s vice president of government advocacy.

“This is why we offer our support for House Bill 166 and Senate Bill 3.”

Taking action to accelerate Cleveland’s economic momentum

Thanks to everyone who joined us last week at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown for the Greater Cleveland Partnership 2017 Annual Meeting, “Building on Our Momentum.”

We were thrilled to host more than 1100 business, civic and nonprofit leaders at this event.

The program included:
  • A preview of our new three-year strat plan, which will be completed by year-end;
  • A visually dynamic and thought-provoking keynote by Susan Goldberg, former editor of The Plain Dealer and current editorial director of National Geographic Partners and editor-in-chief of National Geographic magazine
  • Election of new GCP Board members and the re-election of current members to new terms
  • Presentation of the Commission on Economic Inclusion’s Best-in-Class awards recognizing achievement in board, senior management, workforce and supplier diversity and the 2017 Richard A. Shatten Leadership Award.

Help CMSD eighth-graders set goals for career success

Recognizing that career readiness starts early, an innovative program—True2U—a collaboration between the Cleveland Foundation’s youth development program, My Com, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), the Greater Cleveland Partnership and Neighborhood Leadership Institute—provides CMSD eighth-graders with support to explore their purpose, identify their strengths and set goals for success.

Business professionals are invited to volunteer as True2U mentors for the program for the 2017-2018 school year. This career exploration and mentoring program focuses on raising career awareness for CMSD students on the cusp of entering high school.

Mentors will be trained on a structured curriculum and work in teams of two or three mentors with small groups of students once a month, for the duration of the school year, and will be supported by a CMSD teacher once a month.

It’s well-established that internships and jobs for youth during the summer can have an immediate economic impact for a student on a tight budget and the experience can benefit both the intern and the employer for many years afterward. 

The Greater Cleveland Partnership’s own annual Cleveland Internship Summit continues to highlight how many business professionals look back to summer internships and other structured experiential learning experiences as being extremely beneficial to their careers.

There is always a need for more of these impactful opportunities, particularly for students in more distressed Cleveland neighborhoods.

Join your peers and help build Northeast Ohio’s IT talent pipeline

Industry members of the RITE (Regional IT Engagement) Board are hosting the 2017-2018 sessions of the new RITE HR IT Roundtable. 

IT recruiters, IT HR managers and IT talent acquisition staff from Hyland, Dakota Software, Eaton, OEC and other companies have formed this one-of-kind network of peers that will help drive innovations in the IT talent development system.

The inaugural Roundtable will be hosted by Hyland and held on Thursday June 15 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Hyland’s Building1, 28500 Clemens Road in Westlake. 

Through quarterly roundtables and voluntary opportunities for engagement throughout the coming year, this powerful group will be consulted as IT talent acquisition subject matter experts. 

This kind of industry engagement will enhance efforts to draw federal and state resources to the region to help solve the “IT skills gap” and strengthen RITE’s capabilities to provide a unified industry voice for the region’s IT youth development, education and workforce programs.

Campaign promoting Cleveland around the Republican convention wins national awards

The marketing communications campaign designed to educate visitors and media about Northeast Ohio leading up to and throughout the 2016 Republican National Convention was nationally recognized at the Silver Anvil award ceremony that honors the nation’s top public relations efforts of the year.

The event was hosted last week by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) in New York City .

The community’s efforts received the 2017 Silver Anvil Award in the Events and Observances - Fewer than Seven Days category, as well as a 2017 Silver Anvil Award in the Integrated Communications category. In addition, the entry in the Events and Observances category was recognized as one of five finalists for the Best of Silver Anvil award, the top national honor bestowed by PRSA every year.

The awards were presented to Destination Cleveland who submitted the entries in partnership with the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Cleveland Plus, Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, JumpStart Inc., Downtown Cleveland Alliance and Greater Cleveland Partnership, as well as the five Cleveland-based marketing and communications agencies who supported the campaign – The Adcom Group, Dix & Eaton, Falls Communications, Hennes Communications, and thunder::tech.
