Public investment in arts and culture pays
huge economic dividends

The Greater Cleveland Partnership is backing passage of the November 3rd ballot issue calling for the 10-year renewal (it is not a tax increase) of the current 1.5 cents tax per cigarette sold in Cuyahoga County to support arts and cultural organizations.

Our arts and cultural organizations not only improve the educational performance of our schoolchildren and our community's quality of life, they also pay substantial economic dividends including:
  • Employing nearly 9000 people
  • Generating hundreds of millions of dollars in annual economic activity
  • Attracting millions of tourists and visitors to our region.
Specifically, in 2013, levy-funded organizations generated nearly $350 million in direct expenditures, including $150 million in salaries that supported thousands of jobs, and served almost 6 million residents and visitors.

Y.O.U. ambassadors engage with Opportunity Corridor residents

With construction under way on the three-mile Opportunity Corridor project, efforts have been launched to ensure that the project meets the diverse needs and interests of the neighborhoods that it impacts.

This includes going door-to-door to inform residents about job access and local workforce resources.

Last month, the Opportunity Corridor Partnership teamed with Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.) to recruit and train five Outreach Ambassadors to interact with residents in neighborhoods along the route.

Their assignments took them to the Buckeye-Shaker, Fairfax, Hyacinth, Kinsman, and North Broadway neighborhoods where they passed out information and answered questions about the project.

“The goal was not only to share information with Opportunity Corridor area residents but also provide leadership and interpersonal skills for these young people” said Marie Kittredge, executive director of the Opportunity Corridor Partnership. “Our young ambassadors developed conversation and marketing skills that will propel them towards future internships and eventual careers.”

The Opportunity Corridor, a project championed by the Greater Cleveland Partnership, will improve access on Cleveland’s east side to the jobs, education and culture located in University Circle. It will serve as a catalyst for reinvestment into nearby communities with well-planned redevelopment of more than 300 acres of underutilized land into vital neighborhood assets.

Port study identifies path to stabilize Irish Town Bend and keep the Cuyahoga River open for business

A recent study commissioned by the Port of Cleveland has determined a cost-effective way to resolve the long standing issue of stabilizing Irish Town Bend—a critical bank along the Cuyahoga River shipping channel.

The 16-month study, paid for by the Port and conducted by a geotechnical engineering firm, found that the threat of a landslide is a legitimate concern, but a remediation is less expensive than previously estimated.

“We see the results of this study as good news overall,” said Will Friedman, Port president and CEO. “Challenges exist, but we now know definitively what it will take to stabilize the hill, protect the environment, and keep the river open for business, while also allowing others to seize an opportunity to develop recreational assets.”

Those recreational opportunities include the planned Cleveland Foundation Centennial Trail, a critical connector to the lakefront at Wendy Park that will also run along the hillside.

Friedman noted that the project is a key priority to ensure that ArcelorMittal’s steel plant and other upriver businesses maintain uninterrupted access to maritime services. “We can’t let the risk continue,” he said.

“It would also be serious black eye for Cleveland after we’ve come so far in restoring the health of our river over the past 50 years.”

The Port’s study found that the key element is to construct bulkheading at a cost of approximately $16 million. Earlier public studies estimated the total project cost to stabilize the hill as high as $220 million.

The work could be completed within a year once funding is identified and all property owners consent. The Port is currently teaming with stakeholders and public, non-profit, and philanthropic partners to develop a plan to secure dollars from a number of potential funding pools.

Developers Showcase to spotlight Northeast Ohio’s
business growth potential

NAIOP Northern Ohio’s Developers Showcase on Wednesday, September 30 from 1 to 5:30 p.m., will feature a a panel of national site selectors discussing Northeast Ohio's business growth and attraction strengths, weaknesses and opportunities.

Moderated by William Friedman, president and CEO of the Port of Cleveland, the event will be held at the Music Box Supper Club, 1148 Main Avenue. The agenda also includes an update on planning activities for the 2016 RNC by Greater Cleveland Partnership President and CEO Joe Roman.

In addition, leveraging the Industrial Asset Management Council (IAMC)'s Fall Forum in Cleveland, the program will have a special announcement of a joint initiative of IAMC and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) that will be of special interest to industrial developers and design professionals.

IAMC Executive Director Tate Godfrey will unveil the findings of a new study from the DesignFlex2030 initiative that explores the potential of new design approaches that could lead to more flexible, adaptable and sustainable facilities.

Join the team: Sign up to volunteer for 2016 RNC

Here’s how you can be part of the team that will be working to ensure that our city is best represented during the 2016 RNC and that the convention here is the most successful to date.

You can do it by signing up for volunteer opportunities that will include airport, hotel and transportation greeters, street ambassadors, and hospitality. Other opportunities included clerical, office, and special project support in the months preceding the convention.

How to connect with CSU engineering talent

Cleveland State University’s (CSU) Washkewicz College of Engineering is again partnering with Northeast Ohio companies for its Senior Design program that connects teams of senior engineering students work with sponsoring companies to develop solutions for real-world problems.

The cost of sponsorship is $5,000 per team per academic year (August-May), and your sponsorship is considered a philanthropic gift to the CSU Foundation. Three-thousand dollars of your sponsorship fee will be used to cover material costs for the students’ project design and prototype, while the remainder will cover travel and other administrative costs associated with the program.

Upon confirming your sponsorship, companies will assign a project manager to serve as the contact person who works directly with your student team(s). The team can be viewed as an outside “consultant” working on your defined project, while the project manager would oversees the team’s work to ensure it is meeting company needs.

Last year, about half (23) of the 47 Senior Design projects were sponsored by industry. This year, it is expected that 70 Senior Design projects are available for sponsorship. This is a win-win proposition through which companies receive a tangible benefit of solutions to problems, as well as being able to evaluate potential employee hires over a nine-month period. The students benefit by working on real-world projects in a business environment.

Middle-market perspectives:

It’s understandable that managers and executives at a middle-market company with a full agenda and not many people to execute it, would avoid conducting informational interviews.

After all, what is the upside for them or their company? Why should they add this to their already overflowing to-do list?

Rob Carey, a National Center for the Middle Market contributor and features writer, says there are a few potential benefits that can make informational interviews time well-spent. He also suggests promoting this opportunity on your web page and social media channels.

Cultivating talent: It's common for people with significant work experience to consider changing industries, and it's very likely they will research industry players online. So when they see your company’s stated willingness to conduct informational interviews, they will come to you before going to your competitors.

Changing your company's perspective: Experienced people who come in for an informational interview could provide a unique perspective that might broaden the thinking within your companyt.
