GCP President and CEO Joe Roman sat down with Bill Wills on WTAM Thursday for an overview of some of the current things happening around the city.
They first talked about the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards event, which was held last week to honor local athletes. In recognition of their extensive community and charity work, the Dolan Family—owners of the Cleveland Indians—were presented with a lifetime achievement award.
Joe explained how business is good at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, reviewing how passenger traffic increased to over 10 million people in 2019. This is the highest number in more than a decade. With the announcement of United Airlines to eliminate its nonstop service from Cleveland to LaGuardia Airport and Reagan National Airport, the city is looking to get some other carriers to supplement and provide service to those areas.
Joe and Bill discussed new data that shows Cuyahoga County is still a powerhouse, with the highest gross domestic product in the entire state of Ohio.
In regard to the upcoming Health and Human Services Levy, Joe said GCP is conducting its final analysis in determining its potential support. He explained that the goal is to make sure we don’t have to ask for an increase again in 2024, and that we’ve considered ways to change how we track and measure money and other necessary changes to the structure of our government.
Joe and Bill also talked about how the Ohio senate is considering an amendment to the constitution that would make it more difficult for the legislature to raise taxes. Joe said the state should be credited for being in a decent financial position when compared to others, explaining how we have a strong workers compensation fund and rainy-day fund and the importance of keeping that momentum moving forward.
Joe took a moment to promote two upcoming GCP events. On January 30, GCP will hold a Morning Conversation with Ohio Senator Matt Dolan, who plays a very strong leadership role in the Senate. GCP tries to bring people like Matt to our offices on a regular basis so that our members can hear from them on current things and ask them questions.
Additionally, GCP/COSE is presenting the 2020 Greater Cleveland Internship Summit on February 27. Joe explained that an internship program is one of the best investments a company can make.
